At this point my log rotation is to far back for me to even have a clue
where to get the /var/log/syslog file you're requesting. The path to
the script, /backmeup.sh is expressly stated in /etc/crontab.

I concurrently had webmin installed and removed it hoping for a
solution. No difference in behaviour.

I've added the following lines to /etc/crontab and the lines aren't
being executed. The cron log shows the file being reloaded after the
changes.

This sympton has not manifested as yet. 8.10 is 'bug-free' so far.

I have the same issue also. The only way I've found to 'recover' is to
hold in the power button so as to restart the machine. Ubuntu 7.10, AMD
64 x 2, Radeon 9250 graphics card, 2 gigs RAM, AMD chipset.
I've tried disabling compiz but the issue persists.
