Would like to confirm this bug. I'm wondering if it is already fixed
(see Bug #21971), or if it is related in some way to Bug #208467.

I have a similar problem on my Fujitsu P5020 laptop (Intel 855 graphics,
using default Intel driver), except for me the computer fails to suspend
with Desktop Effects enabled. The screen blanks, but then the hard disk
starts spinning, and the machine locks up. I have to do a hard reset to
get out
This is not limited to Dual Head. A similar problem happens to me on my
laptop with no other monitors plugged in or configured. I'm using the
recent Ubuntu 8.04 Release Candidate (fresh install). I have desktop
effects disabled, using an Intel 855 graphics card with the default
Intel driver. A
I'm running gutsy, 2.6.22-14 kernel, gnome 2.20.1.
I think this might actually be a bug in compiz. I just checked this behavior
with visual effects disabled, and it doesn't seem to happen. Should I post
this to compiz instead?
