Okay, thanks to sedd, I thought: maybe I should use module-assistant and
compile the alsa-source package, and so I did that and rebooted and it
worked.
So here's the proper workaround for my HP Mini 1000 (1120NR) (without
any manual compiling needed!):

I guess the only last thing I have to try is a new kernel (2.6.29).

I just installed daily lpia alternate iso (as of april 20th) + ubuntu-desktop,

I ported debian packages for alsa 1.0.19 to ubuntu on a ppa

I confirm this for the HP Mini 1000 (1120NR with SSD drive) with the
alternate lpia ISO.
The kernel module necessary to recognize SSD drives isn't loaded as it is not
available on the ISO.
This is a regression from previous iso for 8.10.
The Jaunty MID Live CD has the module and works fine with t

I tried to hibernate but the laptop turned off, I think, because when I turned
it on, it went through grub and all that... Didn't see any errors though.
Note that I only have 400mb swap but the used memory was around 200mb when I
tried that.

I confirm what cocoknight said. It worked fine in Ubuntu 8.10 using the
8.10 lpia alternate iso and then installing ubuntu-desktop (just needed
to change some volumes in the mixers).
Here's what I tried so far, with NO SUCCESS:
- "options snd-hda-intel model=ref" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
I forgot to mention that it's a fresh cli installation + ubuntu-desktop.

As Nathan said, the versionning 3.12c-0ubuntu1 is conventionnally correct.
Plus, upstream has also version 3.12b. And one more reason is that their
tarball is named devede-3.12c.tar.bz2 so we have to match that too. And
superseeding can occur with no problem.
