I seem to be the only one suffering from this weird bug so I am going to
try the alternate installer.
By the way, ubuntu showing text output instead of the default splash screen
that I mentioned in my earlier comment, was due to my own doing. Actually,
I edited my grub.cfg file manually and didn't
I tried switching to another tty by pressing CTRL + Alt + F1, but I
couldn't since I hadn't completely booted yet. And therefore I couldn't
access the logs.
I actually tried something different. Instead of booting from a USB drive, I
copied the contents of the quantal-iso to a separate
partition
I downloaded the latest daily build as of 30 September and the installer hanged
again while booting.
These were the last three lines printed on the console:
Stopping save kernel messages [Ok]
Starting restore sound card(s') mixer state(s)

The only problem is that 764 MB is quite a big download to perform.
But I'll try that.
But what I wanted to know is that if there is way such that instead of showing
the Ubuntu logo,
the installer would instead show some text output, so I could find out where
the actual problem is.

Hi Gloria,
Thanks for filing the bug but you see, Document Viewer cannot read RTF files as
it is not supported by it.
To read RTF files you can use LibreOffice, which is present by default on
Ubuntu Oneiric but if you don't have it you can install it from the Software
Center.
Hope this solves

Can you please explain a little bit more about your USB problem. You
mean that when you insert USB the USB icon does not show up and you have

Well, you do not need to reinstall a complete OS just because a single
program is not working. Maybe try to reinstall Document Viewer. If the
problem persists, we'll look at it.

Does the problem persist for *every* PDF that you open?
I use Evince (Document Viewer) everyday and I once got the same problem
while reading a PDF file, but for others it works just fine.

Hope I could, but I don't have it installed at the moment and 100Mbs on
a slow network will be a lot of pain.
For now, I am changing the title so that others can easily get where the
problem is.

Dear Soumitra
Since the bug appears to be effecting only you at the moment and hence
we are not able to reproduce it, it will be a great help to upload the
backtrace of how gvim hangs.
For this you would need `vim-dbg` and `gdb`. The exact sequence of
commands should be:
sudo apt-get install vim
So at least window manager isn't the culprit here. Gvim opens nicely for
me so it's difficult to detect what exactly is the cause of the problem.

Steps to reproduce the bug:

- Run unity-greeter (You should have enough permissions as a user to run this

Just to be sure it is indeed a problem with the window manager, have you tried
opening gvim or emacs not-maximized in Unity-2d.
You can do this by logging out and choosing Unity-2d from the menu located at
top right of the password field.
Since Unity-2d uses Metacity and Unity-3d requires Compiz
