Thanks for your response Laurier.  It appears there is another way to open the 
trash folder.
- Open the Home Folder
- Press <CTRL-L>
- Type ->  " trash:"  (without quotes)

If you are able to access the trash folder, the problem is indeed with
the launcher and might be an easy fix. Otherwise, its a bit more
complex.

Please respond in both the cases.
