I've found the issue. My container is not LXC, it's supplied by
elastichosts.com, a cloud provider, and must be based on some other
containerization technology.
/proc/1/environ does not contain container=lxc as checked for by the
postinit script in makedev, but it does have container=contain in it
The fix doesn't appear to be working for me on xenial. Package being
installed is the one shown above as having the fix, but I still get this
error:

I too am affected by this problem as I used blueproximity under 12.04 to
lock and unlock my desktop, and it is now unable to unlock it again with
gnome-screensaver-command -d.
What is the solution to this? I need to be able to programmatically
unlock the desktop.

I am running Ubuntu 11.04 with the classic desktop (gnome/compiz) and am
experiencing this same bug. gtk-window-decorator crashes with a segfault
whenever I click on the top left window menu icon on any window.

An update on this bug.
I had to reboot my machine this morning due to an electrical outage
overnight. I selected the previous kernel (linux-
image-2.6.35-23-generic) rather than the default latest kernel (linux-
image-2.6.35-24-generic), as I still require all four serial ports and I
