Hi Jeremy,
While I was working at this problem I disconnected the CD drive and left
the DVD drive alone.
There has not been a problem since.
I don't know if it was a faulty drive of if the combination of drives
was the problem.
I no longer have the cd drive so I can't reinstall and try and repr

The problem has gone.
The startup time is now much shorter than it was under Hardy. I
wonder if the problem existed under Hardy but no error messages were
displayed?

Hi, I have been running Hardy for quite some time. I upgraded to
Intrepid and experienced this problem so reverted back to Hardy with no
problems.
I have recently upgraded to Jaunty vi Intrepid and the problem as
returned.
