updates[1] process, which is targeted towards fixing only very high-
impact bugs (mainly severe regressions and direct loss of data).

Could not reproduce the bug on LyX 1.6.0-1.
Please test with LyX 1.6.0-1 (Ubuntu Jaunty) and report if the bug still
occurs. Bug 297941 is a backport request for LyX 1.6.0-1 to Ubuntu 8.04
and 8.10.
To install LyX 1.6.0-1 on Ubuntu 8.10 right now (until LyX 1.6.0-1 is
backported):

Yes, ImageMagick will similarly be installed by default on Ubuntu 8.10
and above.

and upgrade the LyX package only. Then remove the line you added (make
sure to do so) from sources.l
