Could not reproduce the bug on LyX 1.6.0-1. Please test with LyX 1.6.0-1 (Ubuntu Jaunty) and report if the bug still occurs. Bug 297941 is a backport request for LyX 1.6.0-1 to Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10.
To install LyX 1.6.0-1 on Ubuntu 8.10 right now (until LyX 1.6.0-1 is backported): Press Alt-F2 and run: "gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list" Temporarily add the line "deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty main universe restricted multiverse", save, and exit. Reload Synaptic and upgrade lyx and lyx-common. Then remove the line you added (make sure to do so) from sources.list. Take caution to only upgrade LyX and LyX related packages, not your entire system.
