I had the same issue. In my case it turned out that gnome-control-center
had been uninstalled. I'm not sure why, but reinstalling fixed it.

That particular commit actually breaks proper s2idle. Because of it S3
should be used instead on 9360.
It was intentionally broken because of some reported regression by one guy
with an nvme SSD of a particular vendor.

The attached dpkg log shows that grub was successfully installed on your
system in EFI mode. But your bug report claims that your system is not
booted in EFI mode, and shows that you are booted into an upstream
'lowlatency' kernel version, not the 4.4.0 kernel that was installed as
part of the Xub

Also affects Lenovo Flex 3-1120 with BIOS C0CN31WW (v 4.5). Problem
presented after installing latest system updates for Ubuntu 17.10.
Symptoms are exactly the same; BIOS can be entered from system hotkey
F12, but changes to BIOS settings cannot be saved.

Ok, i think i gathered some relevant evidence.
I had the drive plugged on a 16.04, and at some point i noticed it went standby
(led blinking intermittently).
Last dmesg lines were [ 6217.720607] perf interrupt took too long (5053 >
5000), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 25000
