Tried your work around
The last command "dpkg --purge --force-depends "libc6-dev-x32"did help in
resolving the issue.
Very irritating to see that one apt-get install breaks your entire system.

User Accounts endless lo
FIXED wth replacment ifup@.service file used in Systemd 8ubuntu2 in both
desktop machines. One uses the onboard ethernet port, the other was
tested with a pci wifi card not normally used for performance reasons.
Both worked flawlessly with this fix.
The laptop may have a driver issue of some kind,
The patch was merged by linux-sound repository.

I just experienced another 'lockup' at 19:06:06 however this time as
sometimes in the past the 'Hangcheck' error was not present in my
syslog. All that was noted was this:

I am having this problem on a desktop machine. I have to click three
times in a row to register a mouse click. Xubuntu fully upgraded. I
have a genuine Microsoft mouse so that it is fairly generic. I am using

Hi Tim,
As far as I can tell ATM the only difference in most of these
crashes/freezes/screen-corruptions is the frequency with which they
occur and the screen color depending on what point during boot and/or
operation the "freeze" occurs.
Like this is the pic I included with original bug report:
Updating libmlt fixes the bug indeed.
I manually downloaded the packages from Debian packages and installed them
using dpkg.
