Public bug reported:

basic support for a standard laptop touchpad seems to be missing.

The mouse cursor is extremely sensitive - so much so that just touching
the outside areas around the touchpad can cause the mouse cursor to
nervously wander.

Single clicking on a touchpad doesnt seem to invoke click event - or at
least it appeared it didnt because I couldnt get passed the initial
"phone" intro asking me to swipe rightwards to show the launcher.

Why the phone intro is being displayed in desktop mode is baffling -
however - given that I dont own a mouse, with no touchpad support, it
makes testing unity8 more than a bit difficult.

Any plans to introduce such support so that I can help continue testing?
