I have a stock install of Maverick with just one updated package for the
kernel. I'm no expert on the hardware so I can't be of any use there.
I did notice that after I installed the new kernel there were four SPDIF
controls for the Nvidia card in alsamixer and only one was unmuted. I'm

After a bit more digging I discovered something interesting. When
idling, the CPU has the full range of frequencies available to it, from
min to max. But, when the load ramps up, the BIOS appears to step in
and limit the frequency, then ACPI throttling steps in.
I used a simple script (attached)

Ok. We've seen a similar backtrace in bug #651294. My first guess at
the solution hasn't borne fruit, but I can reproduce this locally, so
I'm hunting it down.
Once I've got a possible solution, I'll post it here for you to check
that it works.

after running Ubuntu on two HP omnibook XE3-GC laptop machines
successfully since version 9.04 (with only minor impacts), version 10.10
maverick has a severe problem with X since upgrading from 10.04 lucid.
This type of machine has a S3 Savage/MX chip attached via AGP
Note: I wasn't able to reproduce the problem after doing first a full
update of 10.04 LTS and THEN a distribution upgrade to 10.10 today 13
October. But without a full update before upgrading then I can reproduce
it...

So the fix was not persistent. I tried another approach and added myself
to the video group and GDM group and made sure I had full permissions on
everything. This seems to have worked for now. I want to try a few more
reboots to see if it's persistent. If one of you respond to this soon,
