I think your programs shouldn't use g_format_size_for_display() at all,
due to its brokenness. Many other programs (gnome-system-monitor, gvfs,
palimpsest, etc.) don't use it either for that reason.

Just to indicatet that the small ram and slow disk, perhaps also slower
processor, seems to be part of the problem i have a second computer with more
RAM and better processor with an atheros WLAN chipset, also ath5k driver, and
it performs without problem at the same location that the aspire one

With mainline 2.6.33, the computer hibernates, but on the next boot I get
swapon: /dev/sda4: software suspend data detected. Rewriting the swap signature.
After that, the boot proceeds normally - without any indication of previous
hibernation.

Here is what happens now, with Lucid kernel and nvidia-current:
1. There is no "hibernate" menu in "Turn off computer", using "sudo
pm-hibernate".
2. Screen goes blank, disk activity stops after a short time.
3. Ctrl-Alt-F1 brings me to an intact VT1. Alt-F8 shows GDM login prompt.

The problem went away in Ubuntu 9.10 after a few updates.
Currently suspend/resume works on the system which experienced the
problems previously, with both free and AMD fglrx drivers except that
the fglrx driver usually mangles the pixels upon resume (switching to a
text VT and back to VT 7 fixes

PS: I don't think I ever modified my fstab, and in fact both of my
Ubuntu boxes have a line for the CD. Are you sure that's not the default
configuration?

Looks like they may have fixed it; however, they're way ahead of Lucid.
So I can't test till it's in the repos (or at least a ppa).
Workaround for now:
Show Tabs sidepanel before maximizing.
That works.

Attached is the diff to apply to the upstream tarball mentioned in the
