I don't have many technical details to share, since I'm not sure what
would be helpful (or, frankly, where to find it), but I can share some

Using your test script on Xenial I discovered that after the reboot I
needed to run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to finish the operations that
unattended-upgrades was doing.
Further testing has revealed that there seems to be something wrong with

workaround is to only have one finger on the touchpad at a time, which

I added the oem-audio-hda-daily-lts-xenial-dkms driver using Synapic and
enabled it with the system settings.
That helped a little
Using also the PulseAudio Volume Control I added latency to 32.00 and
that helped too.
The sound still distorts when volume increase. A low volume behaves
well.

While updating packages I can see this happening for a second when the
operation finishes. The decorations (font and icons in particular)
become weird, like if something was broken. See the screenshot to better
understand what I mean.
