You're probably using TERM=xterm on a terminal which isn't xterm and
doesn't support the xterm method to set the X clipboard. Either use the
right TERM for gnome-terminal (TERM=gnome), or turn off the
set-clipboard option in tmux.

some strange behavior when I copy text on my Ubuntu 11.10 box.
If I have two panes side by each and copy text from the rightmost
pane, strange text is injected into the left pane.
