Have you tried StarCalc in StarOffice? I think it will do what you want.
That isn't the way I use a spreadsheet, and Gnumeric is finally almost
adequate for what I do. It is definitely *not* Excel, which, in turn, is
still nowhere near as nice as 1-2-3.
