if you want to
add more features eg: strongs/morph, and those features are not in
usfm format or there is no conversion tool, etc, You might be better
to use direct editing eg: OSIS plain xml. It is not as scary as you
might think :) Just learn for few days/weeks then OSIS xml is not
scary anymore

But changing the name as your suggestion, I don't think it is a good
idea because some bible tools/reader are crossplatfrom (eg: Alkitab,
BD) which can run on Linux, Windows, etc. So it is not a matter of
Operating System anymore.

drawback for svg is viewer is viewer support. For Java
app eg: BibleDesktop/Alkitab there is a good SVG library from Apache.
I am not sure for the C/C++ part, maybe using activeX control from
Adobe SVG Viewer (now unsupported)

I have been using virtual box under linux. IMHO for my purpose, I am
not using it heavily, I just use virtual box to to check compatibility
of my program with other supported OS from time to time. So far I am
happy with Virtual Box
