I have got this working on ubuntu 9.04 (jaunty) server with udev 141-1.2. I
had to read about writing udev rules to make the neccessary changes
/etc/udev/rules.d/60-libsane.rules

I'm not sure about Centos 5.3, but later versions of fedora have
stopped using udev, and use .fdi files in /usr/share/hal/fdi instead.
