I was yesterday already tempted to perform the downgrade to 1.0.19, but
... being pretty new to Linux (Ubuntu) I am still hesitant to listen to
my common sense.
Anyway, I downgraded to 1.0.19 and
chrome://messenger/locale/messengercompose/composeMsgs.properties:

I just clean installed Ubuntu Karmic after having had my first, most
pleasant experience with Ubuntu 9.04.
I use Canoscan LIDE 50 as my scanner, which is supported. On Ubuntu 9.04
it worked out of the box without any problem.
