I just tried my Canon 4400F with xsane.
As a user it claims that there is no device but starting xsane as root
makes the scanner to react " small impulse " but xsane does not start.

Hi folks,
a long time ago I started writing a driver for the Canoscan 4400F
(which is GL843-based) and development has come fairly far along. It's
almost usable even. However, the project has languished since
February, and it doesn't look like it will change anytime soon, for
two reasons:
First,
sounds good. the first time you get image data is really a rush!

I have compiled and installed the following:
- sane-backends-1.0.18
- libusb-0.1.8
After updating /etc/fstab with 'usbfs' parameters I obtained the
following result freom sane-find-scanner:
