there was one more twig I had to do and that was
# chgrp scanner /dev/usb/scanner0
# chmod 660 /dev/usb/scanner0
then things got moving .. I'm stoked

when I run xsane I get the start-up dialog and I accept the EULA ..
then a dialog saying; "failed to detect any device" appears ..
