I'm trying to use my Plutek Optic Pro 600P on Debian Sarge with Sane-1.0.15,
Xsane and Kooka; all the current versions as at tuesday 17 jan 2006.
After re-installing the system I find if I use either the direct or the kernel

You don't have the skills but you'll only use a product with the source
code freely available :-)
Seriously though, I understand and respect your principles. Just hope you
don't expect all developers to make all their work freely available.

You could have a look at josi scan lite, as itt displays a preview of
your scan. It requires Java to run and is still in it's infancy but
check it out if you're interested.
