made some update from I think 12.04 to 14.04 - now normal users, as well
as saned cannot scan anymore:

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner t
I can confirm this can be a problem, carefully set the paths for the
configure cmdline... While I got it basically right for lib, man etc in
the first run, I forgot the bin path... and voila, it called still the
old scanimage cmd ;)

my old canon N656U has no support for 64bit windows drivers, so I
decided to connect it to the linux box in my home. Works without any
problems, but only for one page.
Scanning a consecutive page leads to a stuck scanner with the stepper
motor hitting hard on the 0 position obviously. S
