I think you are not running the version you think you are. On my system:
scanimage -V
scanimage (sane-backends) 1.0.25git; backend version 1.0.25

this is my first mail to the Sane devel mailing list, hopefully it's OK,

I have the mentioned Pixma MG5650 and unfortunately sane does not detect
it during the standard scan process which is performed by the
Scan-Application
