/etc/sane.d/dll.conf was the right hint! ;-)) "brother2" was not mentioned. Thus editing and running 'SANE_DEBUG... scanimage -L' showed the device in full beauty. And xscanimage works now. I'm somewaht surprised that it shows the preview window but does not show anything when scanning. I was u
