This looks more and more like a SCSI problem. Try the following:
export SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_SCSI=3D3
scanimage -L
Please provide the output.

Hello together,
my current system:
Debian unstable (with the corresponding sane packages)
Kernel 2.6.3
Agfa SnapScan 1236U
With my older Kernel 2.4.x and scanner.o everything went fine. After
switching to 2.6.3, xsane and Co. arent able to use the scanner via
libusb.
Some effects:
sane-find-scan
seems I have it loaded, this is the answer after the command :
sg 36492 0 (autoclean)
scsi_mod 108168 3 [sg sr_mod ide-scsi]

Still no scan possible, still 'no device available', even as root :-(

What do you mean with "wrong"? Maybe you use a way too old
SANE/Avision driver ...

Hello,
As I said in former message, I reinstalled the whole fedora, and yes ! the
wireless is still working :-)
Now that I am sure I have a 'virginal' fedora, I tried to launch sane and
Xsane as root and as normal user : 'no device available'.
The export SANE_DEBUG_EPSON = 128 ... returned aga

It's all done now. tools/hotplug/libsane.usermap is waiting for new
entries :)

Do you have the sg module loaded? This is required for SCSI scanners.=20
Please run this
command:
cat /proc/modules | grep sg
Does this print a line that starts with "sg"?

Now we are getting somewhere... Is it still not possible to scan as=20
root user?

The backend gets initialized correctly, so you should find debug output
from the EPSON backend when you set SANE_DEBUG_EPSON. Please try it=20
again:
export SANE_DEBUG_EPSON=3D128
xsane
Does this print anything?

Try to set the debug variable for the DLL backend:
export SANE_DEBUG_DLL=3D3
Then run xsane again. What output do you get?

Have you modified dll.conf as I suggested in one of my previous replies?

You don't have to reinstall Fedora. Just go to the package manager and
select Sane again. It will then automatically make sure that all
necessary
packages are installed.

OK, tried the "reply to all this time", hope it works :-)
I don't exactly know what to do with removing an older version of sane 'cause
when I enter the command :
rpm -qa | grep sane
the answer is :
sane-frontends-1.0.11-3
libsane-hpoj-0.90-19
sane-backends-1.0.12-4
xsane-0.91-1
sane-
