The kernel which Red Hat is currently shipping with 8.0 (2.4.18-14) contains a bug which "breaks" the aha152x scsi driver. This problem is fixed in their newer kernels. -- Chuck

Hi Gerhard, Thanks for looking into my problem. FYI the scanner worked fine in all modes when I used the Epson provided backend. Also there is a workaround (in case anyone is interested) by scanning in Gray mode with contrast set to 75 - this gets me where I want to be anyway. :) ttfn nic
