my tmp directory to /usr/tmp to take care of space issues. While
this works fine in FreeBSD, and seems to work fine on my system, I
wonder if this will lead to problems down the road with my Redhat
system?

configuration directory. This makes me a bit nervous since loss of
the root directory "/" might also cause me to lose my configs.
Can anyone shed a little light on using /etc versus using
/usr/local/etc?

Thanks to all for the responses. I managed to grab the sources and
patches from the Apache SRPM and move them to the directories where I
wanted them. I appreciate all of the help. Getting used to Linux
directory structures is going to take a little time. *grin*
