[RE-wrenches] Large Residence ESS and NFPA 855

2024-05-30 Thread Jason Szumlanski via RE-wrenches
Has anyone dealt with a large ESS installation that exceeds the aggregate storage limits in NFPA 855? The limits are quite low for very large single family homes. I have a situation where we need 120 kWh minimum for an off-grid home. There is a building dedicated for the inverters and batteries tha

I'm not looking at the most recent editions right, but the previous versions of both 855 and the IRC both have statements to the effect of "ESS installations exceeding the permitted individual or aggregate ratings shall be installed in accordance with Section xxx" (pointing to the IFC in the case o

That is how I am reading it. Complying with chapters 4 through 9 would be required. However, I think it will be impossible to comply given the fire suppression requirements. This is a remote off-grid installation, and water supply would be an issue. And I'm not sure how to go about finding someone

Hi Jason, these might help: When agreeable with the ESS owner and approved by the AHJ, fire suppression systems and water supply are permitted to be omitted: ●IFC 1207.8 Where approved by the AHJ, the fire control and suppression systems, the size and separation requirements, and the water supply

I would add to this that the size of the lag is a factor too. 3/8" lags into 1-1/2" wide rafters are going to cause much more damage, and leave larger voids, than the new 1/4" high strength lags I use now.  I like the rafter sistering idea, as a solution, as well as moving the rails up or down

Scott, For liability you might want a before and after inspection by a really top inspector that you trust. I would also ask your insurance for guidance. My insurance is always telling me that going out of business is the typical last straw for roofers. Build a solar pergola😉 Dave Angelini

Great, thoughtful answers from all. I’m going to push this to the FineHomeBuilding podcast crew for their ideas, too. I hate to ask the question I might not want to hear the answer to, but I can’t think of anything more horrible than a failed rafter. That would be the resi equivalent of the inf

The change from Black case to White case was about 3.5 years ago.  The current white case version is either open loop (SimpliPhi 3.8M) or closed loop (AmpliPhi 3.8M) Feather River Solar Electric Bill Battagin, owner 4291 Nelson St. (Shipping) 5575 Genesee Rd. (USPS, UPS) Taylorsville, CA 95983
