Even the industrial Generac ATS's use plastic gears now. They're awful and
parts like the gears, CPU's and sensors have been unobtanium. My preference
has been Eaton first and then Asco.

Nice. I’ve considered using a little jump battery once or twice but still
haven’t had to.
I put on my calendar ~3 years replace all gen-start FLA batteries
because the consequences of them going dead are pretty bad. Curious if you
guys think 3 years is a good rule of thumb.

I recently set up a Generac ATS to transfer to an existing Magnum off
grid system. Grid was added to the house later. I ended up putting a
7ah 12 v battery, 120 vac outlet, and 1 A charger inside the enclosure

simpler RDT models should be used in conjunction with a complex custom
system.
(Kohler’s cheaper RXT models require a keep-alive signal from a Kohler

I have a system with Generac ATS where Grid is Primary source, SolArk
Critical Load is secondary source. And whole home is the Load out of the
ATS.

If you are looking for a very good ATS, you need to look at ASCO that's
what they do, from small less than 100 amp to high voltage multi 1000 amp
units, they are a simple 2 wire start, l also use the Kohler products with
no issues, l have AC Coupled off grid, DC Coupled on grid
