Take a look at www.usplastic.com and check out their polyethylene tanks.
TAMCO is one brand I have used. A 36" x 20" x 20" tank will hold four
large-ish batteries (L-16 or similar) with room to spare. The lids need
some foam tape for air sealing, but otherwise they are acid resistant

ventilated in the sides and top. The side vents are screened to
prevent critter entry.
Non-conductive. Non-corrosive. Extremely durable.

For FLA batteries, we only use plywood for the boxes. I'm worry about
corrosion.
For AGM, we use metal, usually AL. Stainless is more expensive.
Thank you,

After seeing this battery box and seeing the issues that can arise if a large
battery bank is deployed I contacted a local metal fab shop and asked for a
estimate on building one if I needed it. A 45"x40"x 20" battery box with
stamped louvers was about $1000. This was made out of stainless bec
Jesse;
I too have concerns about wooden battery boxes. Have seen a couple close
calls with fires from thermal runaway, and acid doesn't treat wood kindly.
But for a large bank, anything commercial is extremely expensive.
Our current solution is to caulk the wooden box, line with pink foam sheets

Hi Jesse
What is your concern with a wood based battery box?

Jesse,
We have made many battery boxes for flooded batteries of wood,
although not "lumber". Years ago I made them, as I had been a
carpenter in a previous life, but then I found a woodworker who
could build to suit. We have long used "Baltic Birch" cabinet
Hello,
I visited a site on Friday to do some trouble-shooting on a system and noticed
the battery box was homemade by the installer of the system. Made from lumber.
Seems to me like there may be some safety and liability issues with a
homemade/lumber battery box. Maybe I'm getting gun shy afte
Off hand, I can think of two components to this -- conductor heating, and
noise/impedance. From a conductor heating POV, the NEC is fuzzy on specific
distance but the general rule is to not bundle conductors for lengths
greater than 18', or standard derates would need to be applied. With the

Tom:
You want to bundle with conductors of opposite polarity wherever
practical. This helps cancel the AC fields.

hello Wrenches,
Since we usually are using the batteries in back-up applications and thus AGM
batteries, we like to stack them. So we make-up a steel (2"X2" angle) rack,
have our tinner bend-up an enclosure, and get all parts powder coated.
Expensive, but last forever.
On another note; what
I'm using two battery boxes made by Radiant Solar Technology in California.
They're sized for multiple T-105 or L-16, are tall enough to do proper cabling,
deep enough to hold a quantity of acid in the event of a serious spill, and
well ventilated (sides and top). Made from HDPE.

Hi August,
That's it.
http://www.nulime.com/titan-packer-45-polyethylene-storage-chest/p261914 also
sells it for less.
Is $213.08 with shipping included a good price

August,
You might also consider the Contico Pro Tuff Bin. $85 from Grainger.
http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/1RG71
It also holds four L-16 batteries. You do have to keep the cables short and
low though.

Hello August,
See The New Solar Electric Home, 3rd edition, page 225, for a photo of
polyethylene tool boxes used to enclose L16 batteries (also John Wiles' Home

Hi Wrenches -
We're seeing more and more interest in grid tied battery backup systems in
the Bay Area. Anyway, I'm finding that off the shelf battery boxes are quite
expensive - the products from MidNite Solar, DPW, etc are all really nice
but super pricey.
Any recommendations on battery boxe
