I am with you on that onestandby power consumption makes me think
of battery sulphation. The 30 watts Ray mentioned for the Rennai would be a
deal breaker for me.
Hopefully I'll hear from a few others regarding standby
losses...doesn't seem very important what consum
You'll have to shop around; there are still some that use no power. As a
hard-core off-gridder, I hate seeing standby power use, and even worse a
freeze prevention heating element. A good old pilot light keeps them from
freezing too! Geez.

If its a Rinai, I measured one once that was 30 watts AC standby, and
jumped a bit higher when firing. It also needed pure sine.
The customer swapped it for a regular hot water tank.
Some Bosches and old Palomas, etc. had either a piezo ignition or pilot,
but took no power.
