I am out of the office until 12/01/2011.
In observance of the US Thanksgiving Holiday I will be out of the office
until Monday November 28th.
I will have limited access to email and phone from Monday the 28th to
Wednesday 30th due to business travel, but will return to my regular work

Mac:
I make a decent living fixing other installer's work. Someone's got to do
it or the bad systems will never get fixed. Who does that benefit?
I of course need assurance from the customer that I can fix all safety
issues before I start.
I also like to keep one or two pro-bono customers
I had a similar case last year and asked this group for advice. The owner
(former NBA star with the Celtics) had the money and was frustrated enough to
allow us to start from scratch. We did and he now has a great system. I got a
call from him during this past deer hunting season thanking me ag
Mac,
You have already received great advice, different strokes for different folks.
Three things I would add:
Accepting an offgrid customer is a bit like getting married. It is a long term
commitment. You want it to be a happy one. What does that mean to you?
In my experience it is prudent to ex
I agree with Joel and Allan's comments; I just would add that I too have
done many repairs, and rewires and found them to be decent customers. I
also have never been sued, by using Joel's method of avoiding problem
clients.
Usually the rewire turns into a system upgrade ( I always do a complet
I take that to the next level and insist that we bring the system up to current
code and our current workmanship standards, which often exceed minimum code
substantially. In some cases this is impossible, at least within practical cost
limits. It's common to find non-listed or substandard compon
Mac,
1. Write notes on your concerns on your daily service record for
the site visit. Express strong concern.
2. Write a cautionary note on the invoice to the landlord.
3. Decide if you'd to tackle a system rebuild, or if you don't want
to get near it.
4. If
Hello Mac,
I can understand not wanting to get involved in some people's problems, but
electricians, plumbers and other tradespeople make a good living fixing
people's problems. I have examined, tested and repaired PV systems for over 25
years. Sometimes I work with subcontractors or partner up
We don't work on systems that do not conform to code unless the client
agrees that our work will include bringing the installation up to said
code. It becomes our responsibility once we work on it, and even with our
$1,000,000 liability coverage (and my gf is a lawyer), this is still our
policy.
I took some heat several years ago when this same thread went around the
first time and I said we refuse to work on any system we did not sell and
install. Although there have been a few times when I made an exception to
this rule (like crying, pleading, and begging from a homeowner that clearly

Since the invention of the lawyer and insurance agent, there has alway been
liability. Your hourly. Barge includes money that goes to both of them. You
should carry $1M policy and have working relationship with an attorney (that

Hey wrenches,
Wanted to see what everyone does in a case like I just encountered. I got
a call from a tenant for an off-grid system installed by the landlord
(supposedly an electrician). I went up there to look at the site and it
was a mess. System lacked OCPDs, there were gouges in the insulat
We still have ours (of about 15 years) and other than the clock lighting, it's
working like a champ. It does get used less these days since we installed a
ceramic (electric) cooktop also (we're offgrid) and have found creative ways to
use the electric more and more.
Thanks for the upd
Hi Ian
I second Daryl's suggestion of Ecofasten products. They have high quality
solutions and are great at offering support to work through challenging
installs.
Thanks
