The BP-3175B are available now, which are pretty similar to the SX-170s and use
the same frame.

Dana,
Three issues that I see:
1. Unless the MSX66s (I have never heard of MSX-66s, but Solarex made
MSX64s - could that be what they are?) have degraded substantially
(which is quite possible given their age and the intensity of SW
Colorado sun) I'd be careful about low-temp VOC exceeding 150
Hey all,
I have an off grid client that we are moving the existing
sway-backed fixed mount PV array to a new location (the sun
gets blocked Nov, Dec And Jan after 1:30PM; the ex-husbands
bright idea).
We will be mounting the existing [12] MSX66 PV on a Wattsun
tracker at [2] strings 6 modu
Hi Ray,
Good observations...
The reality is that cycle life graphs are not a true representation of the
battery's ability to survive in RE applications. The real test would be the IEC
61427 standard as it closely approximates the conditions that batteries will
face in RE applications. Have you
Hi Jay,
Thanks. Always happy to help...
The cycle life of the L16RE-2V and the L16RE-A and L16RE-B is the same. I have
attached the cycle life graph in Excel format, but just in case the attachment
does not go through, it is also below:

Kent;
Your table shows just what I found as well: too large a battery bank actually
isn't as cost effective.
Also, based on the Trojan chart, you can see that a regular L16 isn't even as
good as golf cart battery, but that the 2 v version doubles the cycle life.
(which makes sense, cycle life i
Ronald,
Thanks for being so quick to follow up such useful information!
Using data extracted from your graph I computed the amphours that the

Hello August,
See The New Solar Electric Home, 3rd edition, page 225, for a photo of
polyethylene tool boxes used to enclose L16 batteries (also John Wiles' Home
Power #98 article). I suggest asking John Wiles where to get the boxes.
Best regards,

HI Ronald,
Thanks for being on the group and giving us good info.
Can you also graph cycle life for the L16RE-2v vs the standard 6v L16RE
Thanks in advance,

Hello Travis,
I apologize for any inconvenience and for not having the data more available.
We are currently working on making sure that system designers have easy access
to our data. The L16RE-2V battery does have significantly more cycle life than
the L16E-AC battery. The "AC" part actually st
Depending on the situation (you may have extremely picky inspectors), and
the customers concern with aesthetics, you can source large tool boxes from
Lowes or any other large home improvement center. They range from $100-$150
(here in the Midwest) and each one fits 4 x L-16 batteries, but they aren
Greetings Esteemed Wrenches,
I searched the archives and didn't find a specific reference to my question
so please accept my apology in advance if this has already been covered.
Are the 2v Trojan L16s a much better option than the "standard" (non-re, 370

Have you tried Solarcraft in Houston yet? Kevin Conlin would be the one to ask
about their battery boxes. He used some of his own battery boxes for his own
house I know. But Solarcraft is also high end commercial/industrial stuff. If
the demand for such equipment is there, perhaps they'll ma

imagine a really reliable way to go through cedar shakes and keep moisture out

August,
Opinion: if a customer can afford GTWB, which is more expensive by its
nature, the customer can afford an $850 enclosure
and inspectors like them.
I have had only success with Concorde SunXtender.

Hi Wrenches -
We're seeing more and more interest in grid tied battery backup systems in
the Bay Area. Anyway, I'm finding that off the shelf battery boxes are quite
expensive - the products from MidNite Solar, DPW, etc are all really nice
but super pricey.
Any recommendations on battery boxe
We've used the big 18" x 18" Quickmounts with good results.

We have integrated a standing seam roof under the array area
with the shake as a trim and keeping with the "look", and
used S-5 clips to attach the array rails to the metal roof.

Anybody have any hands-on experience installing or maintaining Andalay? I've
seen a few opinions go by on the list but I think they were always based on
speculation, not actual experience.
