Roger, etc.,
All reports that have come my way basically concur; with one interesting
exception - that being from a SkyStream owner (and "urban wind dealer").
They are claiming about "500 kWh/per month" from their machine, which is
located smack-dab in the urban heart of San Francisco. This is
I am curious, as a somewhat green off-grid installer, are those of you
having such bad luck w/ the AGS/MATE using a GSCM, such as the Atkinson
products? Or just relying on the OB relay and two wire start gennies? I
seem to be having better luck than others thus far (knock on wood) w/ our

I support and second the thoughts and comments Roy has voiced, as the real
world experience does not yet marry up to the projections and subsequent
client/owner expectations. Without a customer production meter, owners are
basically happy with their units (they rotate so they make power J). With

The industry insiders have a great saying that sums this all up
Skystream owners without production meters love their turbines.
Those with meters hate them.
Let's hope SWWP does what it must to turn this around and do what's
right for
the industry. Hey...I can dream ca

Louis,

earliest foray into the renewable energy biz? It was a 7ft. spruce prop

This is similar to our experience. The price tag of wind sometimes looks
appealing, but it is hard to convince a potential buyer that it is going to
cost them much more than PV over 25 years for the equivalent kWhs. I am
putting an increasing effort into steering prospects towards PV.
I will say
Our experience with the Skystream here in Wyoming has been good so far. We
have installed 6, the oldest one being in operation for about 14 months.
One is part of a battery based grid-tie system, and operated well when
tested. One of the turbines is in world-class wind in Southeast Wyoming. I

This makes it hard to decide if the problem is auto starting (it is) or
lousy gear and poor support? Anyone notice a pattern of support here?
I avoid auto start because murphy moves in on the better designed
systems and bites you in the rear sooner that later, on the lousy ones like

Todd,
Excellent points to which I'd add I've been wondering just how well-designed
these off-grid homes are that need generators to be running when the home is
unoccupied for long periods of time. A home that uses that much power with
no one in it is simply badly designed.

Our sales in dollar amount over the past couple of years are probably around
4% wind and 80% solar (the rest is misc batteries etc).
Of that 4%, I would guess that it accounts for around 15% of our problems,
warranty, phone and email time spent.

I know this is not the topic, but I never
set up auto genny starts and this thread only confirms the correctness
of that decision. Having a machine automatically start/stop while
unattended is IMO a recipe for, at best damage to gear and, at worst a
fire that could destroy the entire homestead.
