Hi all. I'm looking to improve my winter wardrobe this year. I'm
specifically looking for a jacket and pants that work well for riding
- somewhat trim, zippers for ventilation etc. I live in northern
Michigan (the home of miserable winters) so, realistically, I'll park
the bike when it hits aro
Hi again,
Thank you all for your reponses. I'm a little overwhelmed by the
kindly involvement of the members of this group! Last night was fun -
as the replies came in, I was following links and Googling
manufacturers and I learned a great deal about just what I was looking
for. Thanks again!
Hi Seth,
Another option here:
My commuter/cross bike had Avid Shorty 6 brakes when I bought it -
very similar to the BR550s. They stopped pretty well but squealed and
shuddered badly. I tried a lot of different things - different pads,
toe-in adjustments, different straddle cables, help from th
Hi 40_Acres (and a mule?)
I use Shimano A520s on my Ram - I like clipless SPD pedals and shoes.
My commuter bike has the A530s, which I think are terrific for what I
use the bike for. They are the combos - flat on one side, SPD on the
other.
The A520s look good (to me) on the Ram, no issues wit
Hi John,
I'm in agreement with Erik here - I"ve been using a Topeak Joe Blow
for 6 years now and am quite happy with it. The gauge is accurate and
it was reasonably priced. I realize it lacks panache compared to the
Silca but functionally it works fine.

Hi Mark,
You don't mention whether they salt in your area or not. I live in
northern Michigan where they salt with a vengeance.
I can't ride anything nice in the winter here because of the salt.
Even when things clear up a bit, any puddles on the road are
corrosive. Kiss bare aluminum good-bye,
I'm reading The Waterworks by E.L. Doctorow in my Ekornes Stressless
chair. We've had a pair of these chairs for years and years and they
are wonderful.

Hi Gino,
I've had real good luck with the Vittoria Randonneur Pro tires, which
have been superceded by the Hyper model - the Hypers look the same
except for the addition of a reflective band around the sidewall. I
originally bought them because they are pretty light, even in the 35s

Patrick,
Topeak makes a pretty snazzy laptop-specific bag. You need to use
their click-in rack for it.

Hi Christopher,
Another plug here for Habanero. You can get custom geometry and Mark
Hickey, the owner, is great to work with. I love my Habanero
cyclocross commuter.

I see that Avid has changed the design of their Shorty 6 and Shorty 4
brakes. I wonder if the new design helps eliminate the long
cantilever/narrow rim effect that the old style brakes (Avids, Oryxes,
etc.) seem to produce. I've had squeal problems with my old-style
Shorty 6s and I'm thinking of
