To repeat what others have said, 48-50 really is the comfortable limit on
my 18'. I'm running 43mm and the SKS fenders are TIGHT, especially on the
rear. I know normally bike brands normally pad the max clearance to prevent
warranty claims, but Riv hasn't on this model. It really can't go much
For anyone interested in the max size with fenders, the 44mm Rene
Herse Snoqualmie Pass under Velo Orange 52mm Zeppelin fenders fit my 2018
Hillborne perfectly, but I don't think I could go any larger for either
component.

The All Rounder came to me from the original owner who had lots of
documentation, ordered in 1995, delivered in January 1996. Will continue
to evolve components, working towards Shimano 8-speed index, enjoying the
Gevenalle shifter pods.
Hope this link works.

Hey Ben
I have an X-small saddle sack in Royal if you're interested in it. Happy to
sell it at 50% retail, it is pretty much unused. My wife got a new funky
saddle and it doesn't fit the saddle sack!

1. The current weight spec is 4kg or ~8.8lbs. It's pretty hard to get
beyond this weight unless you are carrying something very heavy. For
instance, a 32oz water bottle will fill most (not all but most) of this
bag's internal volume, but that bottle + water still only weighs
I'm looking to convert my Surly Midnight Special to a more Rivendell like

also be interested in suitable brake levers and friction shifters (11spd

The spec is 4kg (8.8ish lbs). I ride mine filled with heavy camera gear and
haven't noticed any steering issues. I'll have production samples in a few
weeks, perhaps you'd like to test one?

This is my first post here because I just picked up my new Sam from Riv

not do a good job of scheming and saving, etc. I've been wanting my first

No, not ok. that's going to have ill, very ill, or maybe very very very ill
affects on your steering when it's even remotely snug (it could tighten up
at will). You're looking for a failsafe, not something to actually do
anything until it's needed. You might try a fairly loose loop of paracord

Holy smokes I didn't even think about steering! I've just been tinkering in
the basement and haven't hopped on the bike to try any of these
configurations.
So just to be clear, you think if I do something loosely connecting head
tube to tombstone, it'd work okay as a failsafe?
I appreciate it
Actually...even better, you mentioned the attachment doesn't need to do
anything until it's needed...would there be any issue using the irish strap
to handlebars connection but keeping it loose enough that it just goes
behind the bag? That might be my best move.

Thanks Sam! How did you like them? I’m wondering if they are a bit too
narrow compared to other bars like the albatross or billies...

Super helpful! Glad to know the Silver2 barends can work as-is with 11
speed, that's news to me. As far as pairing the microshift shifters to
shimano bar ends, they fit just fine, I think the major difference I can
find is that the little flat square "peg" that the shifter fits on are

I have a rack, basket and handlebar bag on my Sam. I do not have a strap on
my basket, I do check all the mounting nuts and bolts when I clean and

Yeah...for the little I'm carrying in the basket, I'm probably being overly

Nice comments, thanks. Color official name os golden olive, and that it
is. Little metallic, little pearl sheen to it. Don’t think cream would be
a good contrast.
Tires are older Compass. Think they are equivalent to Natches Pass, 1.8”.
Room for fenders. Tektro 720 cantis. Still dialing
Beautiful, John. Timeless bike! And I actually prefer the single color
paint jobs from the earlier Rivs, I had a light blue Road that I sold that
was a single color. I now have an early AR also, but it has a contrasting
cream head tube, and I think it makes it a little foppish.
