Hear Hear Patrick!
I like sandals on moderate or fairly "flat" rides with my dual surface
Shimano pedals. However I would not attempt my longer , faster paced rides
with monster climbs- out of saddle -without my SPD shoes and quality
insoles. I have injured my feet in the past by attempting it.
Probably shouldn't look for dates out here in Honolulu in that case. :-)

God, how I hate snobbery on either side of the divide. If you want to
ride in flip flops or Bikenstocks, by all means do so. I like riding,
sometimes, in floppy Hawaiian shirts. But don't call those who use
retention systems "fools" -- that just shows resentment and meanness.
