That's also a great op! Should also work with old Shimano DX 7-sp
thumbies. My set work great with 8-sp cassette's and the stamped clamp
can be opened enough to fit drops. But then stem shifters would work
just as well. Was tinkering with some last night. Swapped the right

I run Paul thumbies with 8 speed shimano barcons, and love them! I use
interrupter brake levers and it makes for a very comfy setup. The
shifters are protected from falls and easily accessed. Most of the
time I am riding on the tops of the bars anyway, and I don't have to
release the bars to shift

I notice this too. I have 9 speeds with Silvers and shifting is
difficult still after 4 months. I'm thinking of going back to 8...my
experience so far is that 8 works better.

I used Riv Silvers as bar enders for a while but became tired of them
jamming me in the upper thigh and seeing them hit my top tube too. I
switched them to the down tube and that is where they shine in my
opinion. Being on the down tube discourages excessive and obsessive
shiftiness plus they are
I just measured. From the pivots, the Silvers are ~ 65mm and the Shimano
are ~55mm.

I have the Shimano bar ends on my Bleriot and an old Trek hybrid beater, and
the Silvers on my AHH. The Bleriot is a 10 spd. that I pretty much leave
indexed. I may be impatient, but it's difficult finessing the fine
difference among ten gears in friction mode. The old Trek is an 8 spd.

Hi All-
I have ridden both bar end (Campy, Suntour), down tube (Campy, Simplex retro
friction, Suntour) and Campy Ergo. My experience
I've had both and my vote goes to the silvers.
They're like butta!

I'm hung up on the same quandary my self ! Just about to mount a set
of Jagwire barcon mounts to a Mercian:

Think I'll transplant the shifters from a set of 9sp Shiman DA rather

If you're looking for a friction-only bar end shifter you can do no
better, IMHO, than the Sun Tour Sprin
I like the way the Shimanos look better, but you know what they say about
beauty. I only friction shift regardless of how many gears there are.

I prefer Silvers. I think it's easier to find the gear with them.

I think the silver and shimano shifters are the same length - it's an
optical illusion.
I like Shimano because the little rubbery cover over the lever feels
good in-hand and is less pointy when I jam my leg into it when I hop
off the saddle carelessly. Also, the indexed option is handy. Silvers

I've used both. I really like the Silvers. I like that they're longer
and the action on them is great.
