The handlebar diameter is fine. You crank down on the clamp bolt and
the metal just wimps out and bends. You get it tight today, and then
shift it a few times over a couple weeks of use, and the metal has
bent enough that it's loose again.

Probably. But the Sunrace shifters also FEEL really cheap, as well as
not costing much. They probably are reliable and functional and
everything Rivbike says, but they don't feel particularly nice when
I've used them. So I can kind of see the appeal of the Silver/Paul

Wouldn't Sunrace friction shifters (http://www.rivbike.com/products/
show/sunrace-thumb-shifters/17-097) serve exactly the same purpose of
the combination of paul-thumbie + silver shifters + Paul adapter for
silver (over $100) for a lot less $16)?

I'm still wondering about the IRD ones. They appear to be threaded
like a DT boss, as opposed to the Thumbies replacing the stock bolt
with a long nut and bolt.
