Otter wax worked great. The grid gray bags came out beautiful, waterproof and stiffer. As expected, it left a sheen on the fabric. The key is to not apply too much wax - the grid tries to grab it - use a blow drier, and rub it in well with your fingers, per the instructions. My photos show

Yes, I'm planning to try something similar with 1/4-inch minicell foam - can get a 2' square sheet for about $5. It will also also insulate it if I want to keep something cool. But also interested in improving the weathering. Last time we got caught in the rain, I had just my front bag mount
