All this talk of the S3X makes me want to put mine back on the Quickbeam, or rig it up on the Ross Porter. Or sell it. I have kind of a wheel hoarding problem... I did like the gear range, since my goal with a fixie (recapturing that word) is to ride one gear, and the low gear extends my ridin

Sheldon Brown has a gear calculator for Sturmey Archer that includes the S3X: http://sheldonbrown.com/gears/internal.html He lists the ratios as 100%, 75%, and 63%. –Eric N Sent from my iPhone 5S > On May 16, 2014, at 6:03 AM, Avery E Wilson wrote: > > I know it's tighter gear spacing than th

I know it's tighter gear spacing than the 3 speed nexus hub, which is like 37% drops. On May 16, 2014 7:16 AM, "Bertin753" wrote: > I thought the gaps of the S3X were the same as those of th AW, 25% drops. > In what way are they tighter? Is love a close ratio 3 speed hub. > > Patrick Moore > iPho

Based on my experience, yes. I've had zero problems with the S3X. Sturmey's 8-speed hub, on the other hand, snapped a pawl inside and had to get sent back for repair. –Eric N Sent from my iPhone 5S > On May 15, 2014, at 3:32 PM, Doug Van Cleve wrote: > > Hey Eric, > > I have thought about a

Hey Eric, I have thought about an S3X for my fixie porteur commuter. I don't frequently carry a heavy load, but might occasionally. Do you think the hub is up for something like that? Thanks, Doug On Thu, May 15, 2014 at 2:03 PM, Eric Norris wrote: > I've been riding two different bicycles

I've been riding two different bicycles with the S3X hub, and I find it to be superior to a standard 3speed hub. As another commentor has noted, the S3X doesn't make ticking/clicking noises (because there are no pawls inside it), making it quieter to ride. I don't have empirical data beyond my

I'm not unhappy with my 72" gear ratio right now. It does get a little tough pulling the bike trailer with 75 lbs of toddlers on board, but nothing I can't handle in completely flat downtown Indianapolis on our wide bike paths. Other than trailer pulling, 72" is perfect for my fitness and wher

I setup a bike awhile back with a S3X with a 16t freewheel. In the end I didn't like the setup and didn't ride it very much, eventually taking the wheel apart and selling the hub. Unless you intend on riding fixed gear with it, I'd say that a regular, coastable 3-speed hub would be better. Also,
