That was mine; still wonderful 17 years later (anniversary in April) with
paint only scuffed or nicked in a few places.
I never noticed any oddness in the metallic specks; would rather like to
see the cluster.

Drew, one more suggestion would be to try WD-40 which contains some
solvents. I've used it to remove dried Frame Saver over spray and did not
experience any harm to the paint. It washes off easily and allows
application of a wax or polish.

Drew, I'd try polishing compounds, starting with the gentlest, toothpaste.
Rub it on with a damp cloth, wipe with soft cloth. (actually, you could

1. Shellac wears off of handle bars over time, so i would imagine if you leave
it alone, it might wear off on its own.
2. Try rubbing with your spit and your bare skin or spit on a rag. Not kidding.
Spit is used by art museum curators to clean paintings. It is the gentlest
cleanser.
