Stem to end looks fine, and with some wrap materials probably is fine.  But my experience with leather and "cork" is that wrapped stem to end my hands peel back the edges of the wrapping between the hoods and the stem.  This might not happen with cloth, and certainly won't happen with shellacke

I have found end-to-stem cotton bartape/twine/shellac gets loose after a year of riding for me. The twine and cotton rotates like a solid cuff when it gets loose. Adding shellac gets it to stick to the bar again. I have since gone to blue lizard skins and twine looks good on it, too. But again,
