the change into glib, that will be a relatively different code
base (my recollection is that glib exits on allocation error which tend
to impact API design so this may be more complex than just different
naming for the functions).

Agreed, I would rather not change the current call semantic,
but an ASYNC flag would be a really good addition. We can document
the risk of not using it in the function description and suggest

Well initially I was really of the position that checking had to be
done at the hypervisor level, but as this thread pointed out we can't
always do this (there is also the potential of conflict between different
hypervisor though that sounds more theorical than pract
command to the qemu processes.
It's never too late for feedback or suggestions, some of you may have done
similar things in the past, but earlier fedback always make things easier :-)
