I'm still having a problem with this. Basically if I recompile the
2.4.18-17.8.0 kernel my USB optical mouse won't work when I boot the new
kernel.Changes to the kernel are: add jfs-1.0.24 (jfs filesystem)
support and add iptables-1.2.7a support.
I've recompiled and followed Markku's advice (below

You should _un_define those and use
CONFIG_USB_HID=m
CONFIG_USB_HIDDEV=m
CONFIG_USB_HIDINPUT=m

I bought a Logitech optical mouse and I couldn't be happier.
I oculd connect with either ps/2 or usb, I chose ps/2 so I would\
not have to alter /etc/x11configs. I just plugged it in and went to
the races. Didn;t even have to reboot.
It's quick and accurate. I'm happy.
Thanks for input.

For smooth operation, add:
Option "Resolution" "1600"
to the mouse "Input Device" section of your XF86Config.
I'm using an optical mouse. Specifically the Microsoft Intellimouse with
IntelliEye. I had an older Intellimouse Explorer which was also optical,
and that worked just fine with Red Hat.It got the hiccups one day so I
replaced it with a small off-white Microsoft with IntelliEye mouse a
couple years

I've been using optical mice for a while now. I am using an optical
Logitech wheel-mouse on my desktop and a WiseTech optical wheel-mouse on
my laptop. Both USB and PS/2 connections work fine.
