"ldd dataserver" what path does it show on the libc
library? It should show /lib/i686/libc.so.xxx

Check /etc/ld.so.conf to make sure it is correct. Also
libraries are
searched based on the environment variable

If you want the quick way, get firestarter GTK 2 version. It is very
intuitive to get started
and once you are protected and management is happy I would strongly
recommend
you also learn about what it is firestarter is doing by following the
other suggestions and reading.

2'nd Edition" published by New Riders and authored by Robert Zeigler. This
covers everything you need to know about iptables and the examples are
