yep, i use mdk 10.1 on my 2.5 yr old sony vaio works fine. although i
havent tried USB or memory stick or cd writing or pcmcia/wirel
I dont know how good dell is in India, but imho dell gives really good
value for money. macs are too expensive too. as for what distro, as
long as it is a reasonably recent release, it does not matter. I have
gentoo which is reasonably cutting edge, which works quite well.

Please check up on Compaq Presario Laptops. They come in cheap these
days, too. Excellent quality. Plus, HP-Compaq are pushing Turbolinux
these days with their PCs. See if u can get it on urs. That's got a
whole range of functionality only designed with a Laptop in mind.

I have seen Ubuntu running on Toshiba Satellites. I
have heard that it supported all of Toshiba's hardware
out of the box.

IBM Thinkpads are a good option to run Linux. A bit on the expensive
side though. Just watch out for "trusted computing" stuff. Its on the
prowl nowadays.

Mandrake and suse are particularly squited for laptops.that said making any
other distribution working well should not be too much work for the right
person.Acer has some good models and cheap too.
