I dont know how good dell is in India, but imho dell gives really good value for money. macs are too expensive too. as for what distro, as long as it is a reasonably recent release, it does not matter. I have gentoo which is reasonably cutting edge, which works quite well. (also check www.linuxlaptops.org)
